Birds of a Feather

The days go by so fast, the snow ball affect of perception on time with age.

The month of June in gay circles is often noted as Pride Month, where week by week various cities celebrate Gay Pride. During these festive you can watch parades, jump onto a float at the last minute, listen to gay singers (Eric Hyman), go to numerous street parties, where an outlandish outfit and feel in place, and most of all feel that your not a minority, that your not alone in being gay.

If for any reason Pride still holds merit it is for the gay population to reconnect and remember our diversity, and celebration of the mile stones that have passed in our civil liberties, and those that still need to be addressed.

I’ve been watching the pigeons a lot lately on my way to work. I’ve watched the male pigeons especially, their dances to attract the attention of the females, the way they puff out their chests as they strut across her path.

There is a lady that I see every morning feeding the pigeons, she refers to them as her babies, and makes meals of cooked rice and gravy for them. Her smile and gentle greeting daily remind me of compassion and how pleasing it is to give of your self to something else. This time of year the pigeons are every where strutting, eating, and by many considered a nuisance. People seem to have interesting reactions to the birds during this time of year. Some people react with disgust at the pigeons, they make sneers at the way they cluster together, comments are sometimes made about how they are dirty, and the spreader of diseases. Others are able to see them as one of God’s creations and so cherish their presence.

When we look at each other, when we look at groups of people that we do not understand… how do WE react to them; sneer and make comments, think in your head maligned thoughts of anger, or are you able to see them for who they are, another part of God’s great creation? As a whole we are one flock that has many dances, many movements, many clusters, and many a feather. I thank God for the people that he has sent into my life, which like the lady feeding the pigeons, provide manna for my soul.
